  34.      Mazindol should be stored at room temperature in a tightly closed
  35. container.
  36.  
  37. USES
  38.  
  39.      Mazindol is used as an appetite suppressant during the first few weeks of
  40. dieting, to help establish new eating habits.  This medication is thought to
  41. relieve hunger by altering nerve impulses to the appetite control center in
  42. the brain.  Its effectiveness lasts only for short periods (three to 12
  43. weeks), however.

  45. TREATMENT
  46.  
  47.      Mazindol can be taken with a full glass of water one hour before meals
  48. (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  49.      If you miss a dose of this medication, take the missed dose as soon as
  50. possible, unless it is almost time for your next dose.  In that case, do not
  51. take the missed dose at all; just return to your regular dosing schedule.  Do
  52. not double the next dose.
  53.      In order to avoid difficulty in falling asleep, the last dose of this
  54. medication each day should be taken four to six hours before bedtime (for the
  55. 1 mg tablet) or ten to 14 hours before bedtime (for the 2-mg tablet).

  57. SIDE EFFECTS
  58.  
  59.      Minor.
  60.  
  61.      Constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, dry mouth, false sense of well-being,
  62. fatigue, insomnia, irritability, nausea, nervousness, restlessness, stomach
  63. pain, sweating, tremors, unpleasant taste in the mouth, or vomiting.  These
  64. side effects should disappear as your body adjusts to the drug.
  65.      Dry mouth can be relieved by sucking on ice chips or a piece of hard
  66. candy or by chewing sugarless gum.
  67.      In order to prevent constipation, increase the amount of fiber in your
  68. diet (fresh fruits and vegetables, salads, bran, and whole-grain breads),
  69. exercise, and drink more water (unless your doctor directs you to do
  70. otherwise).

  72.      Major.
  73.  
  74.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  75. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  76. blurred vision, changes in sexual desire, chest pain, difficulty in urinating,
  77. enlarged breasts (in both sexes), fever, hair loss, headaches, impotence,
  78. increased blood pressure, menstrual irregularities, mental depression, mood
  79. changes, mouth sores, muscle pains, palpitations, rash, sore throat, or
  80. unusual bleeding or bruising.

  82. INTERACTIONS
  83.  
  84.      Mazindol interacts with several other types of medications:
  85.      1. Use of this medication within 14 days of a monoamine oxidase (MAO)
  86. inhibitor (such as isocarboxazid, pargyline, phenelzine, and tranylcypromine)
  87. can result in high blood pressure and other side effects.
  88.      2. Barbiturate medications and phenothiazine tranquilizers (especially
  89. chlorpromazine) can antagonize (act against) the appetite-suppressant activity
  90. of this medication.
  91.      3. Mazindol can decrease the blood-pressure-lowering effects of
  92. antihypertensive medications (especially guanethidine) and may alter insulin
  93. and oral antidiabetic medication dosage requirements in diabetic patients.
  94.      4. The side effects of other central nervous system stimulants, such as
  95. caffeine, over-the-counter (nonprescription) appetite suppressants or sinus,
  96. cough, cold, asthma, and allergy preparations, may be increased by the
  97. concurrent use of this medication.
  98.      Before starting to take mazindol, BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any
  99. medications you are currently taking, especially any of those listed above.
  100.  
  101. WARNINGS
  102.  
  103.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  104. any medications, especially to mazindol or other appetite suppressants (such
  105. as benzphetamine, phendimetrazine, diethylpropion, fenfluramine,
  106. phenmetrazine, and phentermine) or to epinephrine, norepinephrine, ephedrine,
  107. amphetamines, dextroamphetamine, phenylephrine, phenylpropanolamine,
  108. pseudoephedrine, albuterol, metaproterenol, or terbutaline.
  109.      * Tell your doctor if you have a history of drug abuse or if you have
  110. ever had angina, diabetes mellitus, emotional disturbances, glaucoma, heart or
  111. cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, or thyroid disease.
  112.      * Mazindol can mask the symptoms of extreme fatigue and can cause
  113. dizziness or light-headedness.  Your ability to perform tasks that require
  114. alertness, such as driving a car or operating potentially dangerous machinery,
  115. may be decreased.  Appropriate caution should, therefore, be taken.
  116.      * Before having surgery or any other medical or dental treatment, be sure
  117. to tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medication.
  118.      * Mazindol is related to amphetamine and may be habit-forming when taken
  119. for long periods of time (both physical and psychological dependence can
  120. occur).  Therefore, you should not increase the dosage of this medication or
  121. take it for longer than 12 weeks unless you first consult your doctor.  It is
  122. also important that you not stop taking this medication abruptly.  Fatigue,
  123. sleep disorders, mental depression, nausea or vomiting, or stomach cramps or
  124. pain can occur while your body adjusts to discontinuation of this medication.
  125. Your doctor may want to decrease the dosage gradually in order to prevent
  126. these side effects.
  127.      * Mazindol should not be used in children less than 12 years of age.
  128.      * There is no specific information about the use of appetite suppressants
  129. such as this medication in the elderly.
  130.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Although studies in
  131. humans have not been conducted, it is known that some of the appetite
  132. suppressants cause side effects in the offspring of animals that receive large
  133. doses of these drugs during pregnancy.  Also, tell your doctor if you are
  134. breast-feeding an infant.  It is not known whether this medication passes into
  135. breast milk.
